Pros & Cons Of Bioethanol Fireplaces

Pros:

  • With bioethanol fireplaces, there’s little to no maintenance. Cleaning out a fire or stove can be a chore, but if you have a biofuel fireplace, you can avoid this issue completely. Bioethanol fires require little cleaning, making them the perfect choice for low maintenance living.
  • Installing and using up your new biofuel fire is easy. It’s commonly thought that installing a new bio ethanol fire in your home could take days. Nothing could be further from the truth thanks to our simple, sleek designs – our range of bio fuel fires can be set up and installed within a short time frame, leaving you with as little downtime as possible. Some even work as soon as you bring them home – if you want a freestanding bio ethanol fire or freestanding gas fire the setup procedure is much quicker and easier than some other designs of bioethanol fireplace.
  • Bioethanol fires produce no fumes or smoke. One of the issues with older bioethanol fires is that they’ll produce everything from smoke to smells and fumes. With a modern bioethanol fire, these issues are problems of the past. There’s no need for a chimney, vents or a flue system because they only create a limited amount of CO2 and water vapour. It’s not just fumes that are eliminated either; our large bioethanol fires don’t make a sound or produce a smell, providing the perfect clean, contemporary heating solution. Bioethanol fireplaces also burn for up to eight hours without more fuel needing to be added depending on the model chosen.

Cons:

  • Bioethanol gas fires have to be manually filled and lit. Due to the nature of bio-ethanol fires, you will have to manually fill them up with our liquid fuel and light yourself before use.
  • You need to consider how and where you will store your fuel for your new bio ethanol fireplace. Fuel for bio ethanol fireplaces takes up space, and can be an eyesore, so depending on how much you buy you’ll need to find an appropriate place to store your fuel.
  • The room you have your bioethanol fire in requires natural ventilation. Although you don’t need a chimney or flue system like some of our other fires, you will need either a window or wall vent to operate your bioethanol fire safely.

Bioethanol Fireplace FAQs

What is a Bioethanol Fireplace?

This style of fireplace is fuelled by bioethanol liquid fuel which is sustainable energy created from processing plant extracts. No chimney is required so our bioethanol fireplaces are classed as 100% energy efficient and there is no loss of heat output. Bio-ethanol fuel fireplaces are an alternative to a conventional fireplace which would be fuelled by gas, wood or electric.

Which Bio-Fuel Should I Use?

We strongly advise only using liquid bio-ethanol fuel in the bioethanol fires we supply. Liquid fuel is cleaner burning and does not leave residues in the burner or give off smoke or create smells. Gel fuel looks like syrup and it is advised to only use this in outside fireplaces as it can give off emissions. Many of our bio ethanol fireplaces are also suitable for outdoor use so browse our full range and get in touch if you need any help!

How Much Does Bioethanol Cost?

This depends on the bioethanol fireplace design and can vary from 30p/hour to £1/hour. Selection of a high-quality burner tray is important. Costs can vary depending on fuel quality, so get in touch with our friendly team to discuss the costs of a specific bio ethanol fire or for fireplaces in general.

Are there any building regulations related to gel fireplaces?

Contrary to what some sellers of gel fires will have you believe, all gel or bio-ethanol fireplaces require some form of ventilation, normally either a window or room vent. Bioethanol fireplaces must be installed inline with standard building regulations for fireplaces. Bio ethanol fires must be installed in a non-combustible chamber built in a way to ensure the user cannot be injured. The installer must follow standard building regulations guidance for the materials used and ventilation etc. for your home. Any bio fireplace must be constructed of a non-combustible material. If in doubt contact building control at your local council.

Are bioethanol fireplaces safe?

Bio fireplaces have been available in the USA for over 20 years and are growing in popularity in the UK and Europe. These bioethanol fires are designed to be as safe as possible, stable and secure. Normal health and safety is required as normal when dealing with a naked flame and flammable liquids. Our fires have been designed to a high standard and have been tested for safety and durability, and it cannot be stressed enough that when buying a bioethanol fireplace the saying “you get what you pay for” applies. Our fires are designed to last a long time when used as per the instructions. Obviously like all open flamed fires, caution has to be exercised especially where young children and elderly people are in the vicinity. To ensure your safety, you should only use liquid fuel designed for bioethanol fireplaces. No other chemical or substance should be placed in the burner, and bio fireplaces should never be moved when hot or lit. Bioethanol fires should never be refilled when lit or hot. Special care needs to be taken in handling and storing the bioethanol fuel bottles. The fire should only be lit in a well ventilated but a draft free environment.

What’s the difference between Gel and Bioethanol fuel?

Gel is a syrup like substance, and is dangerous to use indoors or in a bioethanol fireplace. All of our bioethanol fires and stoves are designed for use with our liquid bioethanol fuel.

Will a bioethanol fireplace cause condensation on my windows?

All naked flames produce some moisture and water vapour when burnt. The quantity produced by bio-fuel is very small however there are many different things in the home which can cause condensation, so these must be identified. The bio ethanol fire must be used in a room which has adequate ventilation like a window or air vent.

  • Factors which cause condensation in rooms are:
    • Poor Quality Bio-Fuel.
    • Poor Ventilation within the room.
    • Low ambient room temperature due to not using a primary heat source.
    • Cooking and Bathing without sufficient ventilation.
    • Putting Clothes on radiators to dry.

Is there any smoke or smell?

Under normal usage, and with good quality bio-ethanol fuel, all the liquid bioethanol fireplaces we sell have been made to a high standard and will not produce any smoke or smell. It’s impossible to stress how important the fuel quality is, as this has a great effect on the flame, smoke and smell. We strongly advise you to choose good quality bio-ethanol as the fuel is the most critical factor when operating this type of fire. Never use “gel fuel” indoors as it gives off harmful emissions, so make sure only to use the correct fuel in your new bioethanol fireplace!

How do I install my bioethanol fireplace?

Always read the installation instructions before installing and using a bio-fuel fire. With some models a builder will be required to construct a non-combustible chamber in which to house the gel fire burner – we make sure to include installation instructions with each bioethanol fire.
